When Shemp Howard died in 1955, The Three Stooges completed their short subject contract with Columbia by using a body double (and stock footage) to complete their remaining shorts. It felt somehow timeless a throwback to simpler times. It may have aired during the 1960s, but that decade wasn’t exactly the vibe that the series gave off. But if that's the case, then why did the producers do all that but still go - okay, let's promote the idea it's okay to cheat on your girlfriend. What makes it even more confusing is The Andy Griffith Show is always presented as a moral, upstanding show in its stories and characters. And why would a sympathetic character like Barney even do something underhanded like that? Or why wouldn't someone like Andy call him out for taking advantage of Thelma Lou in the first place? In a place like Mayberry, Thelma Lous would've found out about Barney and Juanita in a heartbeat. But what I don't understand is - how could Barney possibly fool around in a small town like Mayberry without Thelma Lou finding out? Everybody knows everybody's business in Mayberry, and news always travels fast in the show. Andy, Helen and Opie would stick around for a few episodes. But throughtout the show's run, Barney is constantly romancing a local waitress on the side named "Juanita." (She's never seen but Barney always talks to her on the phone.) Don Knotts returned as Barney Fife to serve as Andys best man, and Ronnie Howard was back as Opie. In the show, Barney Fife has a steady girlfriend named Thelma Lou. Pictured on the cards are (left to right) Opie (Ron Howard), Aunt Bea (Frances Bavier), Andy (Andy Griffith) and Deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts). It was during his 1981 appearance that his famous confrontation with Jack. So, it’s not surprising that Fridays would give him a chance to be its guest host.
